Chairman’s Newsletter – July

A Message from the Chairman of Harborough Theatre

MHDS Newsletter – July 2021

We are still sitting  here with bated breath wondering if we really will be freed from Covid restrictions from mid-July.

By then it will have been 16 months since the theatre was involved with what it does best – putting on plays.

I have to say I’d hate to be a politician – whatever they decide half the country will agree and half will not, but we are well prepared and my job here is to tell you what will happen if we get the green light and then cross fingers.

Can I say a big thank you to all the people who have ensured the theatre has been improved during the various lockdowns – and many of the improvements are for things like improved ventilation which will make the place a safer and more pleasant place to spend an evening no matter what July’s decision is.

We have achieved the same recognition as some of the most prestigious theatres in the land and it would be a great mistake to think that the ‘See It Safely’ certification is simply some sort of window dressing. I can assure everyone that it’s not and the Society of London Theatres who are sponsoring it would not want some small provincial theatre wrecking the scheme with bad publicity.

We’ve had to show we are as safe as it’s possible to make a theatre and that’s something we must all make sure everyone in Harborough knows.

There would be no point in reopening if people were scared to come and sit in an auditorium and one of our key tasks will be to persuade people that there is nothing to be frightened of.

But now is the time to look on the bright side and put the past 16 months behind us.

We have a proposed 2021-22 season and we can announce the Directors who have been appointed and when auditions will take place.

Tickets for the season will be priced at £12 (which is well below many other similar venues) and Season Tickets, which will be on sale from the 19th of July to 13th August only, will have our ‘7 or the price of 6 offer’ and cost £72. The season tickets will be sold with a money back guarantee if there is any further disruption during the season due to Covid or similar.

Anyone holding a credit note from last year will be able to use this towards the cost of a season ticket.

Tickets will go on sale for Skylight on 7th September.

We also have a couple of other things to raise the profile of the theatre before the reopening:

On Saturday September 18th we will have a stall at the Market Harborough Volunteers Fair, run by Harborough District Council to allow not for profit organisations, like the theatre, to attract new members and spread the word about what we do.

On Saturday September 25th we will have an open day to coincide with this years ‘Arts Fresco Lite’. We’ll be throwing open our doors to offer free tea and coffee to visitors to the town, organise theatre tours and so on.

Please put the dates in your diary. We’ll be sending more information once we know we can open as planned but will need some happy smiling members to help.

We’re also just starting to upgrade the website – it’s seven years since it was last done and seven years in technology terms is a lifetime.

And were aiming to increase our social media presence. and have been introduced to a lady who does this for a living but is happy to become a volunteer with us

And that’s enough for now. Take care and stay safe. Look forward to seeing you at the theatre very soon.
