Catherine is a quiet, shy, naïve, young lady living with her father and an aunt in New York, in the 1840’s. Compared with her late mother she is unworldly, but is about to inherit a fortune. She meets suave, attractive, Morris Townsend, and falls hopelessly in love. Her father disapproves and attempts to thwart the relationship, believing Morris is only interested in her fortune – but is he after her for herself or her money?
Based on the novel Washington Square by Henry James, it was filmed in 1949 starring Olivia de Haviland and Montgomery Clift, directed by Willian Wyler, and won four Oscars, including Best Actress.
