Baptista, a rich Paduan merchant, tells his daughter, Bianca, that she cannot wed until her older sister, Katharina – the Shrew, has found a husband. But Lucentio, a son of a wealthy Pisan merchant, has met and fallen in love with Bianca, and so poses as a teacher to gain entry to the Baptista household to be near her.
