Auditions for Bouncers
Bouncers by John Godber – Auditions Wednesday 4th Januaryat 7.30pm and Sunday 8th January at 4pm, both in the theatre lounge. Playing dates, 4th to 8th April. Although often hilariously funny, the play explores some of the darker corners of modern nightlife and the lifestyle of the twenty-something party animal. Four men play over twenty different characters in rapid succession, all carefully observed but ultimately fast, slick and funny. Actors ages are quite flexible and just offered as a guideline. Eric: 40s 50s, steady, nervy. Eric is a power-lifter and bouncer who often seems on the edge of a violent breakdown. Older than the others, he gives the impression that he is more contemplative. His four long speeches show his abhorrence of what the nightlife culture does to young women. Judd: 30s, 40s, constantly baiting Eric, keen to pick a fight with him, is involved in a bit of petty theft for extra income, Judd used to be a wrestler and was trained as a power-lifter by Eric. Les: 20s, 30s, fiery aggressive, eager to get into fights with the club’s clientele. Ralf: 20s – 40s, calmer, judo player, less explicitly aggressive than the other bouncers. He trains judo and is described by Eric as “Mr Inner Calm”.
The play portrays the girls with attitude, the lads on the pull, the stag party, the hens, the hairdressers, the pub, the loos, the dance floor, the take-away van, and the gutter – all characters played by the same four men in their black suits.
